This interactive, hour long circle is to support children (ages 6 +) to discover and connect with their Power Animal, or Spirit Animal. The flow of the circle: we will begin with playful movement to release excess energy or stress from our physical body and then gently lay upon the Earth as we flow into a guided shamanic journey with soft drumming. When this is complete, each child will share their experience in words or gestures as we go around the circle. Together we will close the circle by honoring our animal with movement, sound and laughter.
This circle is part of the first annual Homegrown Family Health Fair, Cultivating Healthy Homes from Birth and Beyond. "This fair is being held to gather in one place the multitude of resources for families on the East End of Long Island. Our vision and goal is to have a fun-filled day for families to relax, enjoy family-focused activities and experience the variety of local community members that meet a multitude of needs from birth resources to sustainable housing, baby-wearing and children’s nutrition to yoga and energy work." Proudly sponsored by the Long Island Doula Association, Inc. + The Long Island Birth Network.
BACKGROUND:
Children and the Spirits of Nature
Every human being is born with a Power Animal or Spirit Animal, however in our Western culture this relationship is often not encouraged in children and so, as we grow older this connection becomes lost. A Power Animal Shamanic Journey is a drum journey to guide children into the dream world and their inner state of consciousness to awaken the connection with their Power Animal. In most indigenous cultures, children were taught how to work with Spirit Animal's and elders often gave children animal names to remind them of this connection. They believed deeply that this animal provided protection and brought the child into harmony with the natural world, Mother Earth.
As I continue to practice shamanism and native healing, it is my belief that if we support children to nurture this relationship at a young age, it will encourage their wellbeing in many ways. This relationship will support a child's intuitive abilities and their creativity. It will strengthen a child's connection to the rhythm of the natural world around them. It may open a child to a greater ability for self expression and imagination through words, art, dance and song. It may help a child to release fears, bad dreams or stress in the physical or emotional body. It will assist a child in developing empowerment and self confidence as they walk their individual path in the world. It will likely inspire their souls expression through remembering the unique gifts they were born with, their inner starlight. Most importantly during this practice, a child remains in contact with the spiritual words and their inner visionary ability.
